Cast - Lupita Nyong'o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff

Movie ReviewThe cacophonous NYC has an average 90-decibel noise level, equivalent to a human's scream. But to survive alien creatures with hypersensitive hearing, people must be mute – a shirt ripping can get you killed. Samira (Lupita Nyong'o) is trapped, along with her cat Frodo, other hospice patients, and nurse Reuben (Alex Wolff). Their escape route is through the South Street Seaport, but Sam defies orders for a seemingly frivolous mission: pizza in Harlem. This chaotic journey is the heart of A Quiet Place: Day One.

Prequels typically answer lingering questions, but Day One prioritises immediate chaos and character struggles. The narrative leaves you wanting more clarity. Inconsistencies like authorities inexplicably knowing the aliens' water weakness on the first day (while the sequels portrayed several hundreds of days to work out strategies) and a sparsely populated NYC despite the global threat create plot holes.
Despite these flaws, the film delivers a gritty and bone-chilling experience. Close calls, impressive CGI, terrifying creatures, and panic-stricken characters keep you on the edge of your seat. Jump scares and moments of pure terror are plentiful. The movie falters slightly when a new survivor, Eric (Joseph Quinn), joins Sam and her cat. While the first half is thrilling, the second leans heavily on melodrama. Emotional scenes delve into Sam's past, her pizza craving, and her connection to music—elements that, while adding depth, disrupt the pacing.
Pat Scola's cinematography is awe-inspiring. From jump scares to the apocalyptic scenes, especially close-up shots of Lupita Nyong'o, the film creates a chilling and suspenseful atmosphere.
Nyong'o delivers a stellar performance as a hardened, terminally ill woman, conveying volumes through her eyes and expressions despite being mostly silent. Joseph Quinn shines too, portraying a survivor who's both terrified and resourceful. Djimon Hounsou's brief appearance as Henri (from A Quiet Place Part II) provides the only direct connection to the main series.

A Quiet Place: Day One is a visually stunning and suspenseful thrill ride, but narrative inconsistencies and a shift in tone hold it back from reaching the heights of its predecessors. Still, fans of the franchise and those seeking a good scare will find much to enjoy.

Directed by - Denis Villeneuve
Writers - Denis Villeneuve, Frank Herbert, Jon Spaihts
Cast - Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson

Movie ReivewSequels often get a bad rap for being poor follow-ups of the original volume. And if it’s one of the most-awaited movies like Dune 2, the expectations and anticipation are that much higher. But Denis Villeneuve’s outing goes beyond all expectations! This is one of those rare movies that gets it bang on in every aspect – story, narrative, production, treatment, visuals, performances, and music.
Based on Frank Herbert’s book series, the sequel of Dune: One (2021) is monumental and pitch-perfect. Of course, the stunning CGI and VFX will gobsmack you, but all the other nuances are just as incredibly mounted. The story and narrative depth make the sci-fi movie engaging from the first frame to the last. The vast desert landscapes on the fictional planet Arrakis will astound you, and the credit goes to cinematographer Greig Fraser.
The new outing also introduces new characters, and you get to delve deeper into the different tribes’ cultures and backstories. While characterisations are outstanding, from the noble Fremen leader, Stilgar (Javier Bardem), the bone-chilling sociopathic Fyed-Rautha Harkonnen (Austin Butler), or the evil Rabban (Dave Bautista) and Baron (Stellan Skarsgård). Lady Jessica Artreides (Rebecca Ferguson) and Paul’s character arcs deserve special mention. While the former turns into a shrewd Bene Gesserit Reverend-Mother, Paul comes of age and makes some hard decisions. The on-screen mother-son duo pulls off their respective arcs splendidly. Zendaya, as Chani, is brilliant and has great chemistry with Timothée Chalamet. The relationship is bittersweet, and the actors play their parts perfectly.
The world that’s been created, and its mysteries, will leave you wanting to delve deeper. The dystopian desert planet with the most valuable mineral, Spice, has cubic tonnes of holy water that the religious folk would rather die than drink. But they don’t flinch from sucking water out of dead bodies’ systems. All this is perfectly elevated by Hans Zimmer’s music and background score. Not a minute in its 2 hours 46 minutes runtime drags or gets overwhelming.
Dune 2 is more monumental than its predecessor, and if you’re a fan waiting for this big-screen behemoth, head to a theatre pronto. If you’re yet to be introduced to this world, catch Part One for references and the context. You will appreciate the Part Two better. After all, it’s not just a movie to be watched but experienced!

Director - Wes Ball
Writers - Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver
Stars - Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand

Movie Review - Directed by Wes Ball, 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes'opens with a clear shift away from the iconic figure of Caesar, confirming that this beloved character's story is definitively concluded. The film focuses on Noa (Owen Teague), a young chimpanzee who survives a brutal attack on his village. His quest for answers and revenge is the heart of the plot, and his journey reveals more about his species'
complicated relationship with humans and the machinations of the despotic Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand). Along the way, Noa encounters Mae (Freya Allan), a human whose role is crucial yet not fully explored, and Raka (Peter Macon), an orangutan who represents the lost values of Caesar's original vision of harmony between apes and humans.

Although the story and characters in this new instalment don't achieve the same intensity as the previous trilogy, the film sets the stage for an intriguing journey, providing a glimpse into a future that holds potential for more engaging storytelling. The primary characters are mostly digital apes, convincingly portrayed through the remarkable work of visual effects artists and motion-capture performances. They are instilled with realism through their physical movements, facial expressions, and emotions. This technical marvel ensures that the apes are believable in their pursuit of building communities, whether they align with good intentions or more nefarious plans.

Visually, it is a spectacle portraying a desolate world overgrown and reclaimed by nature. Abandoned skyscrapers, lush scenery, and Proximus' stronghold are all rendered with exquisite detail. However, the film occasionally lingers too long on these landscapes, resulting in pacing issues that leave viewers yearning for more narrative depth. The foreshadowing and hints at future storylines suggest that this instalment may serve as a stepping stone for future films, albeit at the cost of leaving some storylines unresolved.

Despite the film's narrative shortcomings, it is an entertaining adventure that engages viewers. The performances, particularly by Teague and Durand, are commendable, and the visual effects set new benchmarks for the franchise. While it may not linger in the memory as the preceding trilogy did, 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' is a worthy addition, offering a mix of action, drama, and visual wonder.

Directed by-S.J. Clarkson
Writers Name-Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker
Cast-Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced
Release Date-2024-02-14
Movie Review-Cassie is a paramedic, who saves lives for a living. But having been raised in a foster home, the idea of a happy family is alien to her. She blames her dead mother for being too adventurous, while being heavily pregnant with her and venturing into the Peruvian Amazon for research on a magical spider venom that has healing powers. Cut to when she grows up, Cassie has a near death experience that changes her life forever. She discovers the ability to see the immediate future. Now, as every friendly neighborhood superhero, Cassie too is committed to using her newfound power positively. But just as she is still discovering it, she finds herself in the midst of a dangerous mission to save three young girls from a formidable foe, who is out to kill them.
It’s a straightforward story that deals with the origin and induction of actress Dakota Johnson as a Marvel superhero, ‘Madame Webb’ into Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Director S. J. Clarkson achieves this purpose effortlessly by ensuring that the story (by Kerem Sanga, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless) is executed with minimal complexity and that’s a plus. But this superhero suspense thriller is never able to lift itself beyond that. It serves more like a teaser to familiarize us with Madame Webb’s superpowers, as she spends a lot of screen time figuring out what the hell is happening with her.
While doing so too, the screenplay never gives its character any unbridled power to truly wow its audience. This means we have to contend with the slow buildup of whatever little suspense there is to hold on to and some cat-and-mouse chase scenes. The action ranges from satisfactory to underwhelming, again never going beyond the usual tropes. There is an overdose of Pepsi Cola advertising woven cleverly into even the most crucial scene in the climax.
Dakota Johnson does well as the clueless superwoman, but the writing is just too lazy to extract much out of her. Still, this twinkling blue-eyed brunette is very easy to root for. The three young girls Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, who play the future superwomen Julia Cornwall, Mattie Franklin and Anya Corazon depict a range of cliches. What’s different is that for once, the black girl here is the rich spoiled brat while the two white girls are less privileged. While their regular avatars are just fine, when sporting superhero costumes, they end up looking like spoofy fancy dressed caricatures. Tahar Rahim as the greedy and power-hungry Ezekiel Sims gets absolutely no backstory to justify his past nor do we get any explanation of what exactly he does for a living.
All we know is that he is a filthy rich paranoid prick, but naive enough to think that setting up a multiple screen surveillance system at his fancy home, with just one lady virtually snooping around 24/7, is going to solve all his problems. The whole attempt to infuse some family feel into the story with Cassie’s colleague O'Neil (Mike Epps) and his pregnant sister-in-law Mary Parker (Emma Roberts) is so half-hearted.
In conclusion, 'Madame Web' falls short of making a significant impact within the superhero genre, serving more as a tepid introduction than a compelling addition to an already saturated universe.

Movie Review : Gru and his family, including the adorable but misfiring loyal minions, move to a safe house in a new neighborhood, feigning new identities and battling new sets of challenges. The bunch must fight the hostility of their snooty neighbors and befriend the person who can blow their cover. If this isn’t enough, they must also fight Maxime and revisit Gru’s old school to steal a honey badger.

Little Agnes and her big eyes ensure the cuteness factor is intact in the franchise and giving her company is Gru’s tiny toddler, new addition to the family. An unconventional looking man with a tough exterior and soft heart has always been the USP of the Despicable franchise. It has always had a rather silly but heartwarming premise. The minions and their (self-coined banana) language lends its own share of fun and comedy.

The fourth instalment retains all those elements, but the script feels overstuffed and half-baked with multiple tracks not quite reaching their full potential. As a result, the film feels incomplete and conveniently rushed. It doesn’t come together. Be it the Gru-Maxime rivalry bit or family relocation crisis, it doesn’t come to fruition to achieve the desired impact. It all feels a bit scattered and a half-hearted attempt to keep the franchise going.

Does it have its enjoyable moments? Yes. But these moments never come together to turn into one story that embodies that heartwarming quality. Then there’s also the 'Avengers gone wrong' track where minions are turned into mega minions, but they do more damage than good. Not many scenes stay with you unlike the previous films barring one. Lucy being chased down by a disgruntled woman has Terminator’s title music playing in the background, making it the funniest chase sequence of the movie.

Despicable 4 is serviceably sweet and enjoyable but not the best in the series.
